Dr. David Backstein

Dr. Backstein is Chief of the Granovsky Gluskin Division of Orthopaedics at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and Medical Director of the Mount Sinai
Musculoskeletal Centre of Excellence. He is an Associate Professor in the University of Toronto, Department of Surgery. He is the author of over 180 peer reviewed research papers, numerous book chapters and internationally published editorials in the realm of hip and knee arthroplasty as well as cartilage regeneration and surgical education.

Dr. Backstein has been named as one of the top 22 orthopedic knee surgeons in North America, by the US publication, Orthopedics This Week and named by Toronto Life magazine as one of the top Orthopaedic Surgeons in Toronto. The Orthopaedic Department which he leads has been recognized by Newsweek Magazine as one of the top 50 Specialized Orthopaedic Departments in the world in 2020.

Dr. Backstein is Associate Editor of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeon’s Journal of Arthroplasty and Deputy Editor of the Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. He holds a number of patents in the realm of Orthopaedic Surgery and is co-founder of Arthrlense, a company developing augmented reality platforms for surgery.

Dr. Backstein completed two terms as member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Adult Reconstruction Knee Program Committee and has been elected into membership of the American Knee Society and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in 2007. He is a member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, the Canadian Arthroplasty Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
